Sebastianskirche - St. Sebastian Church

The probably most prominent building in the center of Linzergasse is the church dedicated to St. Sebastian.

Following Linzergasse, you’ll reach St. Sebastian Church at Linzergasse 41, with the adjoining St. Sebastian Cemetery, one of the most picturesque cemetaries of Salzburg.

The nearby "Bruderhaus" and "Bruderhof" have been used as a hospital and home for the elderly since the 15th century. The church, built in 1512, features a Baroque style with Rococo elements, created by Kassian Singer between 1749 and 1753. The 1818 fire destroyed most original interiors, including Paul Troger's altar painting and ceiling frescoes. The church has a main altar and three side altars.

The church’s façade features a St. Sebastian statue by Konrad Asper, initially part of the Linzertor gate until 1894, and later the St. Blasius Church.

In the cemetery entrance passage, you’ll find the grave of Paracelsus, who died in 1541. Here you can also read the real name of the famous doctor, Theophrastus Bombastus Paracelsus von Hohenheim. Other notable graves include those of Leopold Mozart and Constanze von Nissen (Widow Mozart) and Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, who was denied burial in the Dom’s crypt by his successor, Markus Sittikus.
