Linzergasse Lane

Linzergasse is one of the bustling shopping streets in Salzburg where shops alternate with cafés and restaurants.

Following the natural boundary of the Kapuzinerberg between Platzl Square and Franz-Josef-Strasse lies Linzergasse, one of Salzburg's busiest streets since Roman times, renowned for its shopping opportunities, cafés and restaurants. Often seen as the "little sister" to Getreidegasse, Linzergasse has been a vital thoroughfare for centuries, marked by the Linzertor Gate until 1894.

Most buildings date back to the 14th and 15th centuries, though they have been remodeled over time. The 1818 fire caused significant damage, affecting landmarks like Mirabell Castle and Dreifaltigkeitskirche.

Linzergasse, historically home to craftsmen and merchants, contrasts with the cosmopolitan Getreidegasse. Notable sites include Paracelsus' residence at number 3, the "Engel Apotheke" where poet Georg Trakl completed his apprenticeship as a pharmacist, and the "Gabler Bräu" brewery, birthplace of opera singer Richard Mayr.

Further along, you'll find the entrance to the "Passion Walk" leading to Capuchin Abbey, and the Sebastianskirche church with its famous cemetery. The Linzergasse ends near the former city gate location. The outline of the old Linzer Gate by the way is visible again, inlaid in the granite paving.

In recent years, many buildings have been renovated, preserving the area's traditional charm. The annual "Linzergassenfest" celebrates this historic lane, uniting locals and tourists alike.

Of course for me the most important aspect of Linzergasse is - if you follow the street past its end for a few walking minutes, you will arrive at the coziest little tea house. Yes, RealiTea is very close to Linzergasse. Whether you are out for a homemade cold drink, a pot of tea or excellent fair trade jewellery and accessories, this is the place to be!
